PEARL JAM Gets Behind 'Great Turtle Race'

April 17, 2009

The Pulse of Radio reports that PEARL JAM and R.E.M. are among the "celebrity sponsors" supporting the "Great Turtle Race", a virtual race announced by Conservation International (CI) on Thursday (April 16). According to a press release, the "race" will follow 11 actual leatherback sea turtles as they journey from feeding areas in the colder waters off Canada's Atlantic coast to breeding areas in the warm tropical waters of the Caribbean. CI will issue daily updates online until the race finishes on April 29, with the event aimed at spotlighting an iconic animal species and ways to protect it.

PEARL JAM guitarist Stone Gossard, a strong supporter of protecting turtles and their marine habitats, said in a statement, "The fate of sea turtles, the global marine environment and humanity itself are inextricably tied to the choices we make today. PEARL JAM is happy to be a part of the Great Turtle Race, and we are encouraging all our fans and friends to join the fun, cheer on our turtle, Backspacer, and help save the seas."
